小時候，當時我還隻要6歲，看到一本描述原始叢林壯觀氣象的書，名叫《實在的故事》。書裡有一幅很出色的插畫，畫的是一條大蟒蛇正在吞食一隻植物，上麵就是那幅插畫的覆成品。

此次大人們做出的反應是：他們建議我把這些畫著看起來彷彿敞開肚皮的蟒蛇的丹青放在一邊，然後把精力放在地理、汗青、計算和語法上。這就是為甚麼，在我六歲時，我放棄了成為一名職業畫家的斑斕胡想。第一號、第二號作品的不勝利，令我非常懊喪。這些大人們本身甚麼都不懂，還需求孩子們不竭地、不竭地解釋給他們聽，這真是令人感到膩煩。

So then I chose another profession, and learned to pilot airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.

我把這幅佳構拿給大人們看，我問他們我的畫是否讓他們感到驚駭。

這本書上說：“大蟒蛇把它們的獵物不加咀嚼地全部吞下去，以後，就再也不動了，然後通太長達六個月的就寢來消化掉這些食品。”

每當碰到一個在我看來腦筋略微清楚的大人時，我就拿出隨身帶著的我那第一號作品來測試他。我想曉得他是否真的有瞭解才氣。但是，不管我測試的人是誰，他或者她都會說：“這是頂帽子。”是以，我也就反麵他們談大蟒蛇啊、原始叢林啊，或者星星之類的事。我會把本身降落到他們的程度，和他們談些橋牌啊、高爾夫球啊、政治啊、領帶啊這些。因而大人們就非常歡暢能熟諳我如許一個通情達理的人。

In the book it said: "Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion."I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:
